The Vibe

Perlis is the kind of place most Malaysians drive through on the way to somewhere else. But The Wheel Estate might just be the reason to actually stop. This is a glamping site — dome tents with air-conditioning, proper beds, and a host who genuinely cares about your experience. No pitching your own tent here, just show up and enjoy.

The real draw? Stargazing. Perlis is one of the darkest places in Peninsular Malaysia — low population, flat land, minimal light pollution. The owners here run actual stargazing sessions with someone who knows their stuff. People are staying up until 3am watching meteor showers. That's not something you get at most campsites in the country.

The surrounding area adds to the charm too. Bukit Ketri limestone hill is right next door. The landscape up here in the north feels different — open fields, quiet roads, that slow kampung pace. It's the kind of place where you genuinely decompress without trying too hard.

Getting There

The campsite is in Belukar, Lenga — a quiet rural area in Kangar, Perlis. The full address is Lot 3862, Lorong 7 (B), Belukar, Lenga, 02500 Kangar. Plug it into Google Maps and it'll take you there without too much drama.

The nearest landmark is Bukit Ketri KTM train station, which is quite close. That said, there aren't many Grab drivers operating in this area, and taxis are scarce too. If you're coming from KL, it's about a 5-hour drive up north. Driving is honestly the best option — the roads around this part of Perlis are scenic and worth taking your time on.

No rough 4WD tracks or anything like that. Standard car is fine. Call ahead on 012-711 9973 if you need directions — the owners are reportedly very helpful.

What to Expect

This is glamping, not roughing it. You get dome tents that sleep 4 comfortably — think 2 adults and 2 kids with room to move around. Air-con that actually works. A shower room with water heater. Breakfast prepared by the host every morning. This is solidly in the beginner-friendly, family-with-kids, or couples-who-want-comfort category.

Afternoons can get warm — Perlis is flat and sunny and doesn't apologise for it. Most guests plan their sightseeing during the day and come back to the campsite in the evenings. Smart move. Nights are a completely different story — surprisingly cool, and the sky opens up in a way that'll have you regretting not bringing a proper camera.

There's also a trampoline and board games on site, so if you've got kids in tow, they'll find things to do. It's not a huge resort — this feels more like a family-run place with genuine heart. The sort of campsite where you end up chatting with the owners over breakfast.

What Campers Are Saying

A family who stayed in the 4-person dome said the air-con cooled the whole tent down within minutes of switching it on — which, given Perlis afternoons, is basically a superpower. They planned all their sightseeing during the heat of the day and came back after dinner, and that timing worked out perfectly. Their highlight? Staying up until 3am during a stargazing session, catching a few meteors. Already planning to come back for the May meteor shower.

A solo traveller noted how the low light pollution makes this one of the best stargazing spots she's come across in Malaysia. She also mentioned it's great for just sitting around and doing nothing — board games, good company, quiet surroundings. Said the owners were genuinely friendly and helpful throughout.

One camper who brought kids raved about the trampoline and the overall energy of the place. The host made sure they had everything they needed without being overbearing about it. The breakfast spread got a special mention — local kuih and fried mihun hit differently when you're eating outdoors in the morning cool.

A first-time glamper said it was clean, comfortable, and exactly what they needed to ease into the whole outdoor-stay thing. The air-con was the deciding factor for them — they'd been hesitant about camping in Malaysia heat, and this solved it completely.

One astro photography enthusiast is already planning to return with his imaging equipment. He called it a stargazing-friendly site and gave zero hesitation in recommending it. High praise from someone who clearly knows what dark skies look like.

TAHAN Tip

Book your stay around a new moon period. That's when the sky is darkest and the stargazing is at its best — no moonlight washing out the fainter stars and Milky Way. The owners seem to be clued in on meteor shower schedules too, so drop them a WhatsApp (012-711 9973) and ask when the next good viewing event is before you book. Perlis nights can get genuinely cool, so pack a light long sleeve or a thin layer — the air-con in the dome already does its job, but once you step outside to stargaze at midnight, you'll want it.

If you're planning to cook your own meals beyond the included breakfast, the TAHAN Windmaster Double Burner Stove is worth throwing in the car. Foldable, runs on gas, and you can have two dishes going at once — good if you're here with a family and everyone's eating different things.
