The HIJAU Camp & Cabin, Gopeng — Glamping with a River View (and a Few Caveats)
The Vibe
HIJAU is not a campsite in the traditional sense — no tent pitching, no sleeping bag on the ground. This is a cabin-style glamping retreat up in the hills of Gopeng, Perak. Think clean rooms with AC, meals delivered to your door, a private pool, and a river nearby. If you're picturing a camping trip with your hammock and tarp setup, this ain't that place.
The crowd here tends to be couples looking for a quiet escape, families wanting something a bit more comfortable, or city folks who want the nature experience without roughing it. The owners are clearly passionate about sustainability — you can feel it in how the place is set up, fusing jungle surroundings with modern comfort. Surrounded by trees, with the sound of the river carrying into the rooms, HIJAU has a genuinely calming energy when things are working in your favour.
That said, expectations need to be managed. This is mountain-style glamping with real mountain limitations — patchy data, steep access, and fixed meal times. Some guests have had an amazing time. At least one had a nightmare. Read the full picture before you book.

Getting There
The address puts you at Lot 23183, Kebun Ulu Gerumtum, 31600 Gopeng, Perak. From the Gopeng R&R on the North-South Highway, it's a short drive into the hills. Use Google Maps (search for The HIJAU Camp & Cabin) — the CID link is in their profile so it should find it accurately.
The road up is steep. Not just "a bit of an incline" steep — we're talking a proper climb up a mountain road. Don't expect anyone to help with your luggage. Best to travel light or pack things in a way you can carry yourself. A normal sedan can make it but drive slow and careful, especially after rain when the road gets slippery. 4WD helps but isn't mandatory based on what reviewers say.

What to Expect
HIJAU sits in a lush hillside setting with river access nearby. The rooms are modern, clean, and equipped with AC — more resort than camp. There's a private pool, and the white water rafting starting point is literally a short walk from the property, which is a big selling point if that's what you're after.
Data connection up here is spotty at best. Wi-Fi is available at reception but not in the rooms — and this wasn't clearly communicated to at least one guest who had a rough experience because of it. If you're travelling with elderly folks, note that there are no railings in some areas, so do watch out.
Meals are served at 8am and 8pm — fixed timing, delivered to your doorstep in mangkuk tingkat style, which is actually a charming touch. But there's no food, snacks, or water for sale on-site outside of meal times. Stock up before you head up. This is the kind of thing that can ruin a trip if you're not prepared.
Mosquitoes are a thing near the fireplace area and the river. The staff (shoutout to Faiz who came up multiple times in reviews) are apparently switched-on enough to take you to better, less buggy spots if you ask. Butterflies instead of mosquitoes — sounds like a good trade.

Facilities
Rooms
Clean, modern, comfortable. AC and hot shower work fine. Not luxury hotel-level but well above average for a jungle hillside stay.
Wi-Fi
Available at reception only. Zero in-room connectivity. Data signal is weak or nonexistent due to the elevation. Know this before you book — especially if you need to be reachable.
Pool
Private pool available. Great when it's hot. No railings mentioned, so take care if you have elderly guests or young kids.
Meals
Breakfast at 8am, dinner at 8pm — delivered to your room in mangkuk tingkat. Food quality gets consistently good reviews. No room service outside those hours, and nothing for sale on-site.
River Access
Nearby and accessible. White water rafting start point is a short walk away. There are river spots for swimming too — ask the staff to take you to the better ones away from the mosquito-heavy areas.
Parking
Available on-site, but the drive up is steep. Plan accordingly.

What Campers Are Saying
One couple who came for white water rafting said the whole experience was hassle-free — staff sorted all the activity arrangements, the rafting guides took photos during the trip and sent them to the resort, so they didn't have to worry about their phones getting soaked. That's a genuinely thoughtful touch.
A few guests mentioned Faiz specifically — sounds like he's the go-to guy on the ground. One reviewer said when they complained about mosquitoes near the fireplace, he personally brought them to a different river spot that turned out to be better than the original one. That kind of attentiveness sticks with people.
One couple even got surprised with a birthday cake and room decorations for their anniversary trip — no request needed, staff just noticed and did it. That kind of hospitality is rare and worth calling out.
On the flip side, one guest — a Singapore-based traveller — had a genuinely bad experience. Paid SGD 150 per night (more than a Marriott, by their count), had no Wi-Fi in the room, couldn't reach staff because of poor data, and when they wanted to check out early, spent five hours negotiating a refund through Agoda. That's a serious issue. The price point, the connectivity gap, and the inflexibility around refunds are real concerns that haven't been fully addressed based on what's visible in reviews.

The verdict from most guests though? If you come with the right expectations — offline mode, fixed meal times, no snack run — you'll probably love it. Come expecting hotel service at hotel prices, and you might be disappointed.

TAHAN Tip
Bring enough food and snacks to last between the two meal times — especially if you have kids or anyone who eats outside 8am and 8pm. There is nothing to buy on-site and the road down isn't something you want to drive just for a packet of biscuits. Also, download your maps, playlists, and anything else offline before you head up. Once you're there, assume you're off the grid.
