The Vibe

Gopeng has become quite the camping hub in Perak, and Riverside Camp is one of the spots that keeps coming up. Kampung Jahang is a proper kampung — narrow roads, trees everywhere, river running through. The moment you pull up, the sound of flowing water hits you. That alone already sets the mood.

This is a managed campsite, not wild camping. Lots are demarcated, gravelled, and separated by red brick borders. There's electricity at each lot, a cafe on site, lighting at night. So if you're expecting raw jungle vibes, this isn't it. But if you want a chill riverside getaway with some creature comforts — families, first-timers, friend groups — this fits nicely. It's organised without being over-the-top resort-ish.

The crowd here tends to be recreational. People come for tubing, rafting, kayaking, fishing — there's actually stuff to do beyond just sitting at your tent. On weekdays it can be just you and the river. Weekends obviously busier, but reviewers haven't complained about it being chaotic.

Getting There

Head to Gopeng town, then follow signs or GPS towards Kampung Jahang, 31600 Gopeng, Perak. The road leading in is a narrow kampung road — paved, but tight. Drive slow, especially if you're in an MPV or larger vehicle. You don't need a 4WD but take corners carefully. There's no dramatic off-road section, just typical kampung lane vibes. Call ahead at 014-294 4404 if you get confused — the owner is friendly and will help.

What to Expect

The lots vary. Some are right by the river with a private hut next to it — those are the coveted spots. Others sit about 20 feet back from the water. Ground is gravelled, which is actually a nice touch — no muddy mess after rain, no need for a groundsheet across your common area.

The river itself is clean. Current is mild-ish but slightly strong in parts — fine for adults, but watch your kids. There are calmer spots closer to the forested area which are better for swimming. Activities like water tubing, white water rafting, kayaking, and cave exploration are available — just book in advance with the owner, don't just show up expecting it.

Overall experience leans beginner to intermediate. Families with kids will enjoy it. Couples wanting a quiet getaway will too. It's not for people who want hardcore jungle camping — this is more of a structured outdoor stay.

Facilities

Toilets

This is the weak point. Reviews are mixed — some say functional and clean enough, others say it needs serious work. No hot water, that's confirmed. If you're particular about clean toilets, lower your expectations or bring your own hygiene kit just in case.

Electricity

Each lot has its own power outlet. 24 hours. You can also rent an extension cord from the owner if needed. Rare to find this at a riverside camp — genuinely useful.

Camping Lots

Gravelled and clearly demarcated with red brick borders. Some lots come with a private hut right by the river. Book the riverside lots early — they go fast.

Lighting

Site is lit up at night. Not pitch black like a wild camp. Good if you have kids, less ideal if you want that dark sky experience.

Cafe

There's a cafe on site. One reviewer specifically called out the nasi ayam taugeh — wajib cuba if you're there. Don't skip it.

Activities

Water tubing, rafting, kayaking, cave exploration — all available through the owner. Must book in advance. Not a drop-in thing.

What Campers Are Saying

One group that had the whole campsite to themselves on a weekday said the riverside lot with the private hut was the highlight. Clean river, sound of flowing water, owner greeted them on arrival — the full package. Ants in the hut and flies in the evening were noted, but nothing that ruined the trip.

A solo reviewer who's been to plenty of campsites pointed out this doesn't feel like wild camping at all — and that's not a complaint, just an honest heads up. Gravelled lots, plug points, maintained surroundings, lit up at night. More of a structured outdoor experience. He said waking up to nature sounds with a cup of coffee by the river was priceless — hard to argue with that.

One family who booked Lot No. 4 for two families said the spot (Tapak A) felt a bit cosy but still workable. They managed a 4.4x5.4m flysheet plus a large tent in there. Windy site, good swimming spots near the forest, and staff that actually helped out when needed.

First-timer to white water rafting tried it here on a weekday. Said it was tiring but a lot of fun. Weekday visit meant no crowds. Friendly staff all around.

The one consistent low point across reviews — toilets. One reviewer gave 2 stars just because of it. Beautiful surroundings, cool night weather, but the toilet situation let things down. Take note.

TAHAN Tip

Book a riverside lot (the ones with the private hut) and request it specifically when you call. Don't just book generically — the difference between a riverside lot and one 20 feet back is massive in terms of experience. And if you want to do rafting or cave exploration, call ahead at least a day before, not on the morning of. The owner needs time to arrange it.
