Payung Getaway Campsite & RV Park — Beach in Front, River at the Back, and Actually Good Food
The Vibe
Payung Getaway is one of those rare spots where you literally can't decide which way to look. Beach at the front, calm river and mangroves at the back. Sunrise from one side, sunset from the other. It's in Cherating — yes, that Cherating, the one people have been coming to for decades — but this campsite feels properly thought through. Not just a patch of grass near the sea.
The crowd here is mostly families and couples. It's a gated campsite — you get a passcode to get in — which already tells you the kind of setup this is. The operators, Nat and Ainon, clearly care. The place is clean, well-maintained, and the whole vibe is slow and healing. Suasana dia tenang. The kind of place where you wake up, make coffee, and just sit there doing absolutely nothing for 20 minutes — and it feels great.
They also run a small warung and café on-site. Burgers, pasta, freshly baked bread, sourdough, ice cream, drinks. On a campsite. In Cherating. Yeah, I know.
Getting There
The campsite is along Jalan Kampung Cherating Lama Balok, 26080 Kuantan, Pahang. From KL, you're looking at roughly a 3.5 to 4-hour drive via the East Coast Expressway (LPT). Exit at Gambang or follow signs towards Kuantan / Cherating. From the highway, Cherating is well-signposted — head towards Kampung Cherating Lama and look for Payung Getaway from there. The road in is nothing dramatic — no 4WD needed, no sketchy jungle tracks. Standard cars are fine. That said, if you're coming on a weekend or public holiday, leave early. The drive back through Gombak can be brutal with traffic, especially on Sunday evenings. Plan your checkout time accordingly.
What to Expect
Flat, open campsite right on the beach. The sand is fine and soft — good for kids to run around, good for adults to just lie there. The sea is generally safe for swimming and kids playing, though waves can pick up — one reviewer mentioned it's actually decent for body boarding and learning to surf. The river side offers something different: quiet, calm, mangrove kayaking kind of energy.
This is 100% a beginner and family-friendly campsite. There's no trekking involved, no river crossings, nothing hardcore. You drive in, set up camp, and relax. The operators are hands-on and easy to talk to, which makes a difference especially if it's your first time camping with the family. If you're bringing a big group with multiple large tents, just let them know your tent sizes in advance — Lot 4 and 5 can get a bit tight if you don't coordinate. A quick call to 011-2380 2900 before you arrive goes a long way.

Present on-site. Functional, but reviewers say there's room for improvement. Don't go in with high expectations — bring your own paper and flip-flops.
Food & Café
This is genuinely a highlight. The on-site warung serves burgers and pasta that people actually rave about. There's also a café open in the morning until 6pm — freshly baked bread, sourdough, ice cream, ice cubes, and drinks. Convenient doesn't cover it. This is proper campsite food done right.
Activities
Kayaking through the mangroves is on offer. Body boarding and surfing conditions depending on the waves. Board games available too — good for when it rains or you just want to chill under the canopy.
Security
Gated with a passcode system for registered campers. Adds a real sense of comfort, especially if you're camping with kids or as a couple.
