Kokol Hill Campsite, Sabah — Stunning City Views, 10km from Kota Kinabalu

The Vibe

Kokol Hill sits up in the hills above Menggatal, about 10km outside Kota Kinabalu. The main draw here is the view — and honestly, it's a good one. On a clear night you get the KK city lights spread out below you, and during the day they say the sunset can be something else. Two options for where you pitch: city-facing or mountain-facing. Neither gives you Mount Kinabalu up close, just to manage expectations.

The crowd here is mostly young locals — groups of friends, some couples. It's a relatively accessible hilltop spot so it pulls in a mix of beginners and casual campers who want something a bit more scenic than your usual riverside camp. Breezy at night too, which is a nice bonus for Sabah.

Tip: Come on a weeknight if you can — weekends attract bigger groups and the site buzzes more. If you're camping with young kids or prefer an earlier night, a quieter weekday visit might suit you better.

Getting There

Head to Menggatal from Kota Kinabalu — it's about a 30-40 minute drive from KK city centre. From Menggatal, look for Jalan Kokol and follow it uphill toward Poring-Poring. The campsite is at KM10 along that road. You'll know you're on the right track when the road starts climbing and the views open up.

Heads up on the access road: it's steep and climbs KM10 uphill. The road is manageable in dry season and with a high-clearance vehicle (SUV recommended). During wet weather, the road gets slippery — best to visit April to September when conditions are most solid. If you're driving a normal Myvi or Axia, dry season is smarter.

What to Expect

The campsite sits on a hilltop with open ground — pick your spot between the city-view side or the greener mountain-facing side. The terrain is grassy but has exposed earth underneath, so bring boots rather than slippers. Set up early to grab the best city-view spots before they fill up.

Crowd levels depend on the season. During quieter times, you might have the place nearly to yourself. On weekends and holidays it fills up quickly — so book ahead if you're targeting a specific weekend.

This place suits casual campers who want a scenic night out, and beginners do well here. Families can make it work too — just plan your visit for dry season (April–September) when the ground holds up and the views are clearest.

Parking
