Kanopi Tipi is a beachfront glamping site in Sungai Rengit, right on the eastern tip of Johor near Pengerang. The location itself is genuinely nice — tipi-style tents set up steps away from the beach, sea breeze, the works. On paper, it sounds like a solid weekend escape from JB or even Singapore.

But here's the thing — the experience is wildly inconsistent. Some families come here and absolutely love it. Clean toilets, fresh seafood BBQ, kids splashing at the beach. Others arrive to find their tent wasn't prepared, the BBQ spread was limited to chicken wings and hotdogs, or the advertised party event was nowhere to be found. The gap between what's marketed on social media and what actually shows up at your tent is... significant.

So go in with realistic expectations. If you're just looking for a chill beachside glamping trip and you're not banking on any special event packages, you might have a good time. But if you're booking based on something you saw on their Instagram, call ahead and confirm everything before you drive all the way to Desaru.

Getting There

The address is Lot 1231, Jalan Kg Punggai, Sungai Rengit — near the Sunrise Camp 2 area in Pengerang, Johor. Postcode 81620.

From JB, you're looking at roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic, heading towards Pengerang via the coastal road. The road to Sungai Rengit is paved and straightforward — no 4WD needed. If you're coming from Singapore, Pengerang is accessible via ferry from Changi Point to Tanjung Belungkor, which actually cuts down travel time quite a bit.

Look out for the kampung roads near Jalan Kg Punggai. It's a bit tucked in, so use Google Maps with the CID link and don't rely on just the postcode. You can also call them at 018-786 5152 if you're getting lost in the area.

What to Expect

Tipi tents right by the beach — that part is real. The beachfront access is the biggest draw here and it delivers. You're literally a few steps from the sand. Sunsets from your tent, morning walks on the beach, kids can play freely. That bit is legit.

The glamping setup is basic — don't expect resort-level interiors. You're paying for the location and the experience package (BBQ dinner, breakfast, activities) more than the tent itself. Based on what campers say, the quality of those add-ons varies a lot depending on which package and which day you visit.

Crowd-wise, it gets busy during long weekends and public holidays — Chinese New Year, Valentine's Day, Raya. That's also when the issues seem to compound: overbooking, missing tent setups, BBQ stations blocking sea views. If you can, avoid peak dates or at least confirm your exact booking details in writing before you arrive.

This is best suited for families or couples who want a low-effort beachside getaway without setting up their own camp. Not for hardcore campers — there's nothing rugged or adventurous about it. Just bring yourself, manage your expectations, and enjoy the beach.

Since it's a managed glamping site with tents provided, you don't need to haul your own sleeping gear. Immediate. Steps from the tents. This is the highlight and it's consistent across all reviews — positive and negative alike.

Parking

Seems available on-site. No specific complaints about parking, but given the overcrowding issues on peak days, arrive early.

What Campers Are Saying

A family of seven who came during Chinese New Year had a genuinely great time. They loved that the toilets were clean and close, that the BBQ had fresh seafood, and that the kids could just run to the beach anytime. They also made a day trip to the nearby mini zoo, the 6 Temples Village, and went for seafood in Pengerang town. For them, the whole package worked.

Another camper echoed the same — cozy tents, peaceful beach vibes, surprisingly clean facilities. Said she'd come back without hesitation.

But then there are the other stories. One group paid nearly RM1,000 for a 3-day 2-night stay and felt completely shortchanged — breakfast was roti canai only, the BBQ was minimal, and when they raised concerns, the on-site host dodged responsibility. They also flagged that the campsite claimed to be non-pet-friendly after they'd already arrived with a dog on a leash the whole time.

Someone else came specifically for an advertised "party" event they'd seen all over social media. Nothing. No event, no explanation. The only thing that matched the poster was a movie night on a big screen — showing a Chinese film. And to top it off, the BBQ was placed right in front of their tent, completely blocking the sea view.

Then there's the Valentine's Day booking disaster — a group booked 3 tents, showed up to find only 2 were ready. They mutually agreed with the owner to proceed with 2 tents and get a refund for the third. Two months later, still waiting. Multiple calls, multiple promises, no refund.

So yeah — experiences here are genuinely all over the place. The location is real. The management? That's the gamble.

Book on a weekday or off-peak if you can. The horror stories — missing tents, overcrowding, events that didn't happen — all come from peak weekend bookings when they seem to overstretch. Weekday visitors tend to have a quieter, smoother experience.

More importantly: get everything confirmed in writing. WhatsApp screenshots, confirmed package details, what's included in your BBQ and breakfast. Don't just take verbal assurances at the point of booking. If there's a refund policy, ask them to spell it out before you pay.
