The Vibe

This one's a bit different from your typical Malaysian campsite. Caribbean Campsite in Kampung Ruat, Yan sits right between paddy fields and the Straits of Malacca — so on one side you've got Gunung Jerai looming in the background, and on the other, open sea stretching to the horizon. It's a flat, breezy, wide-open kind of place. Very kampung, very chill.

The crowd here leans toward families and casual campers — people who want a relaxed weekend away, not a hardcore jungle expedition. You can drive right up and park next to your tent, which the regulars love. No carrying gear 2km into the jungle. Just pop the boot, set up, and enjoy the view with a cup of kopi.

Don't come expecting a postcard-perfect white sand beach though. The shoreline here is muddy and silty — not suitable for swimming at all. But for a sunrise walk, or just sitting and watching the sunset over the Straits? Memang syok. That sea-and-mountain combo is genuinely hard to find at a campsite in Malaysia.

Getting There

The campsite is in Kampung Ruat, Yan, Kedah — about 35–40 minutes north of Sungai Petani and roughly an hour south of Alor Setar. From the main road, head toward Jalan Kuala Ruat and follow it into the kampung. The area is flat paddy land so visibility is good — you'll spot the campsite without much trouble. Road condition is fine for regular cars, no 4WD needed. Easy access, as multiple reviewers point out.

If you're driving from KL, budget about 3.5 to 4 hours depending on traffic. Nearest town for supplies is Yan — grab whatever you need before heading in. Contact them at 010-798 8816 to confirm your booking and get precise directions if you're unsure.

What to Expect

Flat ground, good drainage (reviewers mention the soil is porous so water clears fast after rain), and individual campsites with their own power points. You can park your car right next to your tent. It's a managed site — the owner is around and by all accounts friendly and helpful.

The beach walk in the morning is genuinely nice. Just don't go in expecting to swim. The water is shallow and muddy — purely for walking and taking in the view. One reviewer brought bikes and said it was a great call. That's the vibe — slow, easy, scenic.

There's some litter on the beachside which a few visitors have flagged. It's a real issue, not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing. Crowd-wise, expect families and small groups, especially on weekends. Suitable for beginners and families — not a technical or challenging site by any stretch.

Facilities

Toilets

Clean by campsite standards. Multiple reviewers specifically called this out as a positive. No hot water though — cold shower only, so manage expectations.

Water

Strong water pressure at the washing sinks. That's always a good sign at a managed campsite.

Electricity

Power points at every individual campsite. This is a big deal. Charge your phone, run a fan, whatever you need.

Parking

You park right next to your tent. Can't ask for much more than that.

What Campers Are Saying

The dual view — Gunung Jerai behind you and open sea in front — keeps coming up in almost every review. One YouTuber who did a vlog on this place said it's the only spot he knows where you can watch the sunrise behind the mountain and the sunset over the sea horizon, both without any obstruction. That's a pretty rare combination.

A family who came for a small gathering said the sunset view was beautiful and the facilities gave them zero problems. They did note — no water heater, so be prepared for cold showers. Not a complaint, just a heads up.

One reviewer gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of rubbish on the beach. She said if the management cleans that up, it's a solid 5. Fair feedback. The beachfront cleanliness seems to depend on how recent the last cleanup was.

The owner gets consistent praise for being friendly and approachable. Pricing seems reasonable — nobody complained about cost. And the drainage after rain? One reviewer specifically mentioned the ground stays dry because of how porous the soil is. That's actually huge — nothing worse than a waterlogged campsite.

TAHAN Tip

Set up your tent facing the sea for the sunset, then walk around to the back of the site toward the paddy fields to watch the last light hit Gunung Jerai. Do this in the golden hour — it's genuinely one of the better views in Kedah and most campers miss the mountain side because they're fixated on the sea.
