The Vibe

This one feels like you're camping at your kampung uncle's place. Campsite Atok Am sits in a dusun durian area in Hulu Langat — big old trees everywhere, proper shade, the kind of coolness you don't expect only 22 batu from the city. Drive in, and you immediately get that "okay, we're properly out of the city" feeling. Mist rolls in every morning. Nights get cold enough that you'll want a light layer.

The crowd here is mostly families and couples looking for a laid-back riverside escape. Not a hardcore jungle crowd. Not glampers either. Just folks who want nature without roughing it too hard. Kids are very welcome here — the river is shallow and calm, a proper kids' river. Cats and dogs roam freely around the site, so if you're not an animal person, heads up. But honestly most campers seem to enjoy the company.

The owner — Atok Am himself, from what people say — goes above and beyond. Firewood? He'll sort you out. Need to explore the area? Reviewers have even been lent a motorcycle to go around. That kind of hospitality is rare and it's the thing that keeps people coming back for a second and third time.

Getting There

The address is Lot 3460, Batu 22, Sungai Lopo, 43100 Hulu Langat. From KL, head towards Kajang, then make your way up into Hulu Langat. Follow the signs towards Sungai Lopo — it's roughly Batu 22 on the old trunk road heading deeper into the valley. Google Maps CID is available, so just plug in "Campsite Atok Am Hulu Langat" and it should pull up correctly.

One reviewer noted their car bumper was slightly low and they still made it in fine, so access is generally okay for regular cars. No 4WD needed. Road conditions are typical kampung road — manageable but don't rush it. If you're heading there on a weekend, go early. Groceries and supplies are about 6km away, so top up before you go in.

What to Expect

Big shady trees, a cool microclimate, and a river that's genuinely 2 minutes' walk from your tent. The campsite has a proper kampung atmosphere — pondoks next to the riverbank, fruit trees all around, and if timing is right, durians literally falling from the trees nearby. The owner has reportedly shared durians with guests during season. Tak payah cari lagi, the durians find you.

For the more active type, there's a one-hour hike to Lapoh Waterfall from here, and shorter trails to smaller streams. It's not a hardcore trail but it's something to do if you've already done the river and campfire thing. The public river just in front of the site can get crowded with day visitors on weekends — one camper noted oily residue from picnic crowds, so that's something to be aware of. The campsite river access is the better spot.

Supplied by the owner. You don't need to hunt for it or bring your own — that's a proper value-add right there.

Connectivity

Unifi Mobile 4G works intermittently. XOX doesn't. Manage expectations accordingly — this is still a kampung area.

What Campers Are Saying

A group who did a 3D2N stay here described it as "calm, serene and peaceful at night" — the kind of silence you forget exists when you live in the Klang Valley. They came with a campervan and said it was easy access even for a low-clearance vehicle.

One repeat camper (this was his second visit) said the owner is super helpful and the vibe is genuinely relaxing. The fact that he came back says more than any five-star rating.

A family with kids said the river is fantastic for children — shallow, clean in that stretch, and cold. Parents can sit nearby without worrying. The cold weather at night was a bonus — kids slept well.

One reviewer did flag that the public river in front of the campsite gets crowded on weekends, and there's sometimes oily residue from picnic-goers. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing. Camp-side river access is the better option anyway.

Multiple campers brought up the durians — this is a dusun durian after all. If you happen to visit during season (usually June–August and then November–January depending on the variety), there's a real chance the owner shares some with you. That alone makes the trip memorable.

TAHAN Tip

Nights here get genuinely cool — surprising for a Selangor lowland site, but the valley location and tree cover make a real difference. Don't assume it'll be warm just because you're not in the highlands. Pack something to sleep in.
