Getting There

The campsite is located at Monkey Beach (Pantai Kerachut area) within Penang National Park, Teluk Bahang. From George Town, head towards Teluk Bahang — it's about 25–30 minutes by car. The national park entrance is at the end of Jalan Teluk Bahang, past the fishing village.

From the park entrance, Monkey Beach is roughly 3km on foot through jungle trail. The path is well-trodden but can get slippery after rain. Expect about 45–60 minutes of hiking with a loaded pack.

The smarter option, especially if you're bringing camping gear: contact Black Pearl directly (018-949 3213) and arrange a boat transfer from Teluk Bahang jetty. It takes maybe 15 minutes by boat and saves you the haul. They'll charge you for it — around RM50 for the return trip based on what campers have mentioned — but honestly, worth every ringgit if you're bringing a tent and cook gear.

What to Expect

This is a barefoot-and-slow-down kind of place. No 4WD jungle drama, no summit grind. Just a beach tucked inside a national park where you set up camp, swim a bit, eat, sleep, repeat. The pace is deliberately slow and that's the whole point.

There are a few operators on Monkey Beach — Black Pearl is the one worth staying at based on what campers say. The other setups are comparably basic: expect tents without mattresses, simple A-frame bungalows, maybe a small bar nearby. It's not glamping, and it's not hardcore camping either. It sits somewhere in between — beach camp with basic amenities.

Creepy crawlies are part of the deal. Ants, the odd cockroach, a small spider here and there. If that's going to ruin your trip, this isn't your place. But if you're fine with nature being nature, it's a very doable and genuinely special spot. Mosquitoes are reportedly not as bad as you'd expect — the sea breeze helps.

This suits solo travellers, couples, and small groups who want to unplug. Not ideal for families with small kids unless they're adventurous types. Definitely not a beginner's first-time camp either, mostly because of the access logistics.

Multiple campers bring up Bang Din by name — which tells you a lot. One group said he shared sotong with them on the first night and they felt like family the whole stay. That's the kind of host who makes people want to come back, and several reviewers did say exactly that.

A solo traveller who stayed for 10 nights — yes, 10 nights — said it was the calmest and most social stretch of the whole trip. Met new people, had a proper reset. If that's not a ringing endorsement for the vibe, I don't know what is.
