Yun Hai Camp And Stay — Sea of Clouds Above Kota Kinabalu

The Vibe
Yun Hai — 雲海 — literally means "sea of clouds." And once you're up here above Kota Kinabalu, you'll get it immediately. This is a managed campsite sitting up in the hills of Kampung Tombongon, along the Jalan Kokol road. You're not roughing it in the jungle. You're at a proper hosted campsite with tents set up for you, staff on site, and views that make you stop whatever you're doing and just... stare.
This place is made for people who want the camping experience without the faff. The host sets everything up — tent, cookware, the works. You just show up, breathe in the cool hill air, and let the clouds roll in. Families, couples, groups of friends — this is that kind of spot. Relaxed, clean, friendly. Not a hardcore wilderness experience. More like a "disconnect from the city and feel human again" kind of place.
The crowd here tends to be families and leisure campers from KK and beyond. Weekends can get busy but if you time it right, you might have the whole place to yourself — which, based on what people are saying, feels absolutely magical up in the clouds.

Getting There
The campsite is at KM1.3 on Jalan Kokol - Tombongon, Kampung Tombongon, about 88450 Kota Kinabalu. Kokol is a well-known hill area northeast of KK city — most locals know it for the Kokol Haven resort up the road, so you can use that as a landmark reference when asking around.
From KK city centre, head towards Menggatal and then up the Kokol hill road. The road winds uphill — it's paved but narrow in sections, the kind where you slow down when another car comes from the opposite direction. A regular car is fine. No need for 4WD. But take it easy on the bends especially if it's been raining — hilltop roads in Sabah can get slippery.
Plug the Google Maps CID link into your navigation or just search "Yun Hai Camp And Stay" — it should pull up correctly. Call ahead at 010-397 8018 if you're unsure, the host is responsive.

What to Expect
This is a hill campsite with open grassy areas and big sky views. The kind of place where kids can run around freely — one reviewer specifically mentioned how much her kids loved the big open space. The terrain is gentle, nothing technical. Good for elderly family members too, though the toilet situation might be a consideration (more on that below).
The big draw is obviously the view — on clear mornings especially, the sea of clouds rolling over the hills below you is something else. Sunsets can be incredible too depending on the weather. Cool temperatures up here compared to KK city, so sleep is actually pleasant.
It's a beginner-friendly and family-friendly spot all the way. The host provides tents and gear, so you don't need to haul your own setup if you don't want to. That said, hardcore campers who prefer DIY can still bring their own kit — one reviewer noted that option exists too. Overall crowd level is moderate to chill — not a party scene. Just people who want to slow down.

Facilities
Tents & Setup
The host sets up everything for you — tents, sleeping gear, the lot. You can also bring your own if you prefer full DIY mode.
Cookware
Provided by the host, but it's basic non-stick-free stuff. Bring cooking oil and a spatula if you're planning to fry anything.
Toilets
Clean, but squatting type. Hot water available though — which is a nice touch up in the hills. If you have elderly family members with mobility issues, heads up — squat toilets can be a struggle for them.
Water
Hot water available at the toilets. Good sign for a campsite at this level.
Staff & Host
Multiple reviewers highlight this specifically — the host and staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. Booking and registration is smooth. Communication is solid.

What Campers Are Saying
Wong TF put it beautifully — sea of clouds, sea of friendliness, sea of hospitality. He basically said: let the host handle the setup and focus on what matters — your people and your surroundings. Take a breath. Slow down. That kind of review tells you everything about the vibe of a place.
Eng Seng called it super clean and chill with easy access and a friendly host. "Easy access" is a big deal for a hilltop campsite — means you don't need a 4WD and you're not hiking in with a 20kg pack.
Ms. J Hassim came with family including an elderly mother and gave it 4 stars — loved the space, loved the peaceful setting (they were the only group that night), but the squat toilet was genuinely tough for her mum. Honest, fair review. She also flagged the cookware — non-stick pans would go a long way. Worth the management hearing that feedback.
Tim Mars just said the environment, view, and staff are "very awesome" and there's nothing better than staying a night here. Sometimes that's all the review you need.
Felicity Yap summed it up well — peaceful, refreshing, clean facilities, friendly staff. Perfect for a short getaway with family or friends. She's coming back. That says enough.

TAHAN Tip
Wake up before sunrise. Seriously — set your alarm for 5:30am or so. The sea of clouds effect is strongest in the early morning before the sun burns it off. If you sleep through it you'll kick yourself. That's the whole point of camping up here rather than just doing a day trip. Don't waste it.
