The Vibe

Ulu River Lodge isn't your typical pitch-your-tent-and-stare-at-the-stars kind of place. This is more of an activity base camp — a lodge set in the forest just outside Gopeng, Perak, where the whole point is to do things. White water rafting, waterfall abseiling, cave exploration — this place is the launchpad for all of that. If you're expecting a quiet, peaceful solo camping experience, this probably isn't it. But if you're the type who wants to check off three adrenaline activities in a single weekend, you're going to love it here.

The lodge is run by the Riverbug team, who also operate guided outdoor adventures in the area. So everything is pretty well-organised — guides, gear, bookings. The crowd that shows up here tends to be families, friend groups, and corporate retreats who want to do something beyond makan-makan. First-timers welcome. Kids too, based on the reviews.

Don't expect a resort. Rooms are basic — jungle lodge standard. But the setting is legit, the staff are warm, and the food apparently hits. Morning breeze, river sounds, good company. That's the deal here.

Getting There

The lodge is at Jalan Kampung Rawa, Kampung Jahang, Gopeng — that's 31600 Gopeng, Perak. Gopeng is easy to reach from the North-South Expressway; just exit at Gopeng and follow signs toward Kampung Jahang. Google Maps CID is solid for this one — plug in the coordinates or search "Ulu River Lodge Gopeng" and it should come up. The area around Gopeng has quite a few outdoor camps, so make sure you're heading to the right one.

The road into the area is manageable for normal cars — no need for 4WD. Once you're there, note that transport to the activities themselves is done by truck. Yes, the back of a truck. It's part of the experience, honestly.

What to Expect

This place is activity-first, accommodation-second. You're not just sitting by a river — you're going into Gua Tempurung, getting thrown around in white water rapids, or abseiling down a waterfall. The guides from Riverbug are the real stars here. Multiple reviewers called out specific guides by name (Jazzy, Radzi) — that's always a good sign. When people remember your guide's name two weeks later, it means they actually did their job well.

The Tempurung Cave Exploration Stage 4 is the most challenging cave route in Gua Tempurung — it's not a tourist stroll. That's the one that involves crawling, wading, the works. The rafting on Gopeng's rapids is exciting but not terrifying — good for families and first-timers who want to feel the rush without feeling like they're about to die.

Internet? Basically zero. This is mentioned by a reviewer, but honestly for a place like this, that's a feature not a bug. Leave the group chat on read for a weekend.

Facilities

Rooms / Accommodation

Basic lodge-style rooms. Clean enough for a forest setting — don't walk in expecting hotel standards. Think functional, not fancy.

Food

On-site meals are available and reviewers say the food is genuinely good. Not just "okay for a camp" — actually delicious, according to multiple people.

Guides & Activity Gear

Top notch. Riverbug provides all the gear for rafting, caving, and abseiling. Guides are professional, safety-conscious, and genuinely fun to be around.

Transport to Activities

You ride in the back of a truck to get to the activity sites. Embrace it.

Internet / Connectivity

Weak to none. Not a deal breaker — you're here to do stuff, not scroll.

What Campers Are Saying

One reviewer did the full Gua Tempurung Stage 4 cave exploration with their family and said their guide Jazzy was "very professional" and genuinely looked after their safety throughout. They had such a good time they're already planning a return trip to do more activities. That says a lot.

Another camper went for the whole package — hiking, white water rafting, and waterfall abseiling all in one trip. His take? Riding in the back of a truck to each activity was a bit rustic, but 100% worth it. He gave the place five stars without hesitation.

A few people highlighted the staff attitude as the standout. One reviewer specifically said the rooms were "ok" but gave five stars anyway because of the crew — the Riverbug team in particular. That kind of service loyalty doesn't happen by accident.

Someone also went for the caving activity solo and mentioned guide Radzi took time to explain the actual history of the cave, not just shepherd people through. That's the kind of detail that makes an activity feel worth the money.

The rafting gets consistent praise — exciting rapids but manageable, good scenery, and guides who keep it fun without being reckless. Ramdi, one of the reviewers, said it best: "chill guides who made sure we were safe but also had a good time." That balance is harder to get right than it sounds.

TAHAN Tip

Book the Gua Tempurung Stage 4 cave exploration in advance — it fills up fast, especially on weekends and school holidays. Don't assume you can walk in and join a session. Call ahead on 012-313 1006 or book online through Riverbug. Also, bring a full change of clothes for every activity day. Separate dry bag for your phone and valuables when rafting — the guides will tell you this too, but bawa dua set baju, trust me.
