Tiwung Escape, Kundasang — Insane Views, Rough Road, Worth It?
The Vibe
Tiwung Escape is a small, privately run campsite tucked away in Kundasang Lama — and when I say tucked away, I mean it. You're up in the hills of Sabah, about 1.8km off the main Kundasang town road, surrounded by cool highland air, cloud-kissed ridges, and one of the best direct views of Mount Kinabalu you'll find from a campsite anywhere in Malaysia. Wake up to Kinabalu on one side and rolling clouds over the hills on the other. That's the kind of morning that makes you forget you slept on the ground.
The campsite is run by friendly, hands-on owners who actually care about the place. It's small and quiet — not a party spot. Think healing retreat energy, the kind of place you go when you need to unplug properly. They offer two options: pitch your own tent or book a cabin. Either way, you're getting that view.
Fair warning though — this place is not for everyone. The road to get here is genuinely rough. We'll get into that below. But if you can make it, the payoff is real.
Getting There
The campsite is at Jalan Dumpiring Bawah, Kundasang Lama, about 1.8km from Kundasang town centre. From Kundasang town, you'll be heading towards Kampung Tiwong — look for the turning off the main road.
Now, that 1.8km stretch? It's rough. Multiple reviewers flagged it, and one charter driver actually got his undercarriage scraped a few times. Lowered cars — avoid completely. Standard saloon cars like Kancil, Axia, Myvi can make it when it's dry, but after rain it becomes a muddy challenge. If you're driving a 4WD, no problem at all.
The good news: the owners know the road is a problem and they're helpful about it. They've offered to pick up guests from Kundasang town centre using their pickup truck. Call ahead — 011-5136 3696 — and sort out transport before you arrive. Don't just turn up in a lowered car and hope for the best.
What to Expect
This is a highland campsite at elevation, so expect cool temperatures, especially at night. Nights in Kundasang regularly dip below 20°C, sometimes lower when it rains. Pack accordingly. The campsite itself is well-maintained. When it rained heavily one evening, the campsite didn't flood at all — good drainage, solid ground setup. That's important in Sabah where the rain doesn't mess around. The site is small and quiet, so don't expect a big camping scene. This is more of an intimate, slow-paced stay.
Who's it for? Couples looking for something away from everything. Solo campers who want headspace. Families are okay too, but the road situation means you need to plan your vehicle carefully. Not ideal for first-timers who've never dealt with access challenges — but the owners are helpful enough that even beginners who come prepared will be fine.
Facilities
Toilets
Clean — multiple reviewers specifically praised this. Has a water heater for showers, good water pressure, and a place to hang your clothes. No bidet though, so manage accordingly. Electricity in the toilet block was still in progress at time of review but the owners said it's coming.
Water
Tap water available at the kitchen sink. Soap provided. The water pressure is reportedly strong — one camper was genuinely excited about this. For Sabah hill camping, that's a win.
Kitchen & Cooking
There's a stove on site for cooking and BBQ. Shared kitchen sink with dish soap provided. Rubbish bins provided too. Just note — there's a deposit system and they will keep your deposit if you leave trash. Read the notice board carefully when you arrive.
Electricity
No power plug points. Solar-powered lights are available on site. Bring a powerbank for charging devices.
Cabin Option
If tenting isn't your thing, they have a cabin available. Rental gear is also provided so you don't need to haul everything up.
What Campers Are Saying
A solo camper who stayed here said the owners were genuinely helpful — even went out of their way to provide a pickup from town when the road became an issue after rain. He noted the campsite didn't flood despite heavy evening rain, and left with a strong "will come back" impression.
A couple who did a 2D1N stay in June said the road from Kundasang town was the only real challenge. Small cars can manage in dry conditions, but they strongly recommend a 4WD or at least a high-clearance vehicle. Despite that, they gave it a glowing review — the quiet, the clean toilets, the good water pressure, and the overall energy of the place made it worthwhile.
One reviewer summed it up cleanly: you can see Mount Kinabalu, catch the sunrise and the sunset, cook your own food, and the people running it are genuinely warm. That's a hard combination to beat in Kundasang.
The one honest 2-star review came from a hiker who descended from Kinabalu and stopped here for the night. His main gripes: the road condition hit his charter car hard, and he lost his deposit over a small amount of rubbish he accidentally left behind. He felt the owner could have been more lenient given how little trash was involved. Fair point. Just be thorough about cleaning up before you check out — the trash rule is real and they enforce it.
TAHAN Tip
Book your stay on a weekday if you can. Tiwung Escape is still a relatively quiet, off-the-radar spot and the best experience here is when it's just you (and maybe a couple of other tents) with that Kinabalu view all to yourself. Also — Kundasang nights get cold. Seriously cold. I've seen people underestimate highland Sabah temperatures and regret it by 2am.
