Sungai Tua Recreational Forest — Not Quite What You're Looking For

The Vibe
Let me save you the trip before you even pack your tent. Sungai Tua Recreational Forest is not a campsite. At least not in the way most of us mean when we say we want to go camping. What you'll find here is an Orang Asli village — an aboriginal settlement — and while that's genuinely interesting in its own right, it's not the riverside campsite experience you were probably imagining when you searched for this place.
This seems to catch a lot of people off guard. They drive out expecting a recreational forest with tent pitching, maybe a river to splash around in, and instead they roll up to a kampung. Awkward? A bit. Worth driving all the way from KL for? Probably not, if camping is what you came for.
If you're curious about Orang Asli culture and the surrounding forest area, there might be something here for you — but go in with the right expectations. Don't show up with a tent and a cooler box thinking you're setting up camp for the night.

Getting There
Sungai Tua is in Selangor, not far from the Gombak area heading north of KL. The name itself refers to the Sungai Tua river and the surrounding forest reserve. You can plug the Google Maps CID link into your navigation — here's the pin — but just know that what greets you at the end of the road may not be what you expected.
The access road into the area is relatively straightforward from the Selangor side — no 4WD required based on what people have reported. But there's not much info out there about specific road conditions because, honestly, not many campers are writing home about this one.
What to Expect
Based on what visitors have said, the "recreational forest" label is a bit misleading. The area around Sungai Tua does have forest, and the river is real — but the main point of arrival seems to lead you into an Orang Asli settlement rather than a designated campsite or recreational zone.
If you're a family or solo camper who looked this place up hoping for a chill riverside setup, you'll likely feel lost. There's no clear campsite infrastructure reported here — no designated tent areas, no camping facilities to speak of. It's the kind of place where you show up, look around, go "eh, salah tempat ke?" and turn back around.
Not suitable for camping beginners, families, or really anyone who wants a proper camping trip. It's not that the place is bad — it's just not a campsite.
Facilities
Camping Area
None that we know of. No designated tent pitching zones reported by any visitors.
Toilets
Unknown. No reviewers have mentioned any toilet facilities for campers.
Parking
Presumably you can park near the village entrance, but nothing specific has been reported.
What Campers Are Saying
There's only one review worth mentioning here, and it says everything: Azri Rashid gave it one star and wrote — "Not the place we looking for, just aboriginal village." Short, honest, and exactly the kind of heads-up you need before making the same mistake. He drove out expecting a recreational forest campsite and found an Orang Asli settlement instead. That one-liner probably saved a few people a wasted Saturday.
There aren't other reviews to go on, which itself tells you something. Campers aren't exactly flocking here and raving about it. The silence says as much as the one-star does.
TAHAN Tip
If you're set on camping in the Sungai Tua or Gombak area, don't rely on the "Recreational Forest" label alone — verify with locals or check recent Google reviews before making the drive. Several actual campsites operate nearby in Selangor that'll give you the river, the trees, and the whole experience you're actually after. Don't waste the petrol on a wrong turn.
