Janda Baik has no shortage of campsites. Seriously, the place is packed with options. But SIR Camping Site stands out from the usual roadside setups because it's fully gated — high fence, proper entrance, and you can't even see inside from the road. First impression? Feels legit. Private. Like someone actually thought about security before opening up shop.

When you arrive, you check in at a front counter and Mr. Parish — the owner himself — will brief you. That personal touch already sets the tone for what kind of place this is. It's not some absentee-landlord situation where you're left to figure things out yourself. He actually walks around checking on campers throughout your stay. Some people might find that intrusive, but honestly for most campers, especially families, it's reassuring.

The grounds are green and open, with a small fishing pond at the center and chickens and ducks wandering around like they own the place. At night, the temperature drops properly — bring a fleece or a sleeping bag rated for cooler temps. Crickets go loud. Stars come out. It's the kind of campsite that doesn't try too hard but delivers where it counts.

Getting There

The address is Lot 8536, Kuala Lurah, Kampung Janda Baik, 28750 Bentong, Pahang. If you're coming from KL, head towards Bentong via Karak Highway, then turn off towards Janda Baik. The area is well-signposted once you're in Janda Baik proper. Plug the Google Maps CID link or just search "SIR Camping Site Janda Baik" and it should pull up. The road into Janda Baik is paved and fine for normal cars — no 4WD needed. Once you spot the high-fenced gated compound, you're there.

What to Expect

No fixed lots here. You pick your own spot and pitch wherever you like. Most people gravitate towards the lake area — it's the obvious crowd-pleaser. But if you want something quieter and shadier, head to the back. There's a "dark zone" area that's more secluded, has its own cabin-style toilets, and feels a bit wilder. Good if you want to actually disconnect instead of being elbow-to-elbow with the lakeside crowd.

The campsite fits up to 50 tents according to the owner. On weekends it probably fills up — this is Janda Baik after all, and gated private campsites here get popular fast. Weekdays would be way more chill. The place suits beginners and families well. It's not a hardcore jungle experience — it's managed, grassy, and has facilities. A good step up from your first camping trip without being too sanitised.

One thing to flag: the fees are dynamic. What you pay depends on your tent and flysheet setup — how big, how you deploy it. Ask when you check in so there are no surprises at checkout. Not a dealbreaker, just something to be aware of going in.

Toilets

This is where SIR Camping Site gets a bit split. One reviewer straight-up said the toilet was a disaster and their kids were geli to use it. Another said the bathrooms were relatively clean. There are two zones — the main area toilets and the dark zone cabin-style toilets. Your experience might vary depending on which you're near and when you visit. Bring your own paper. Always.

Showers

Cold water showers available. Morning shower is refreshing — maybe too refreshing given how cold it gets at night. Works fine though.

Electricity

Plug points are available on site. Good for charging your devices or running a fan if you have one.

Fishing

The central pond allows fishing on a catch-and-release basis. Bring your own gear.

Wheelbarrows

Provided at the site to help you haul your gear from the car to your tent spot. Actually useful if you're carrying a lot.

Rubbish Disposal

Drop off near the office area. Keep your campsite clean — Mr. Parish is walking around, so he'll notice.

Parking

Available within the gated compound. Safe and covered by the perimeter fence.

What Campers Are Saying

Sabri, who did a three-day two-night stay, said it was one of the more well-managed private campsites he's been to in Janda Baik. He pitched in the dark zone specifically to get away from the busier lakeside crowd and appreciated the cabin-style toilets there. He also mentioned that early check-in (around 10am) and late checkout (around 4pm) was possible — that's a solid window for a camping trip without feeling rushed.

Another camper described it as ticking all the right boxes — cool air, running river sounds, dark quiet nights, and a gated perimeter that made him feel safe. For campers who worry about random strangers wandering into their site (you know how some open campsites can get), this place solves that problem.

Howard raved about the animals wandering around — chickens, ducks, the whole kampung feel. If you're bringing kids who haven't seen this kind of thing up close, they'll love it. Small things but they make the experience feel alive rather than sterile.

The critical review came from Food Lover, who gave it 2 stars — specifically because of the toilet condition. They weren't shy about it: "tak sanggup nak take photos" is how bad it apparently was during their visit. Given that the price isn't exactly cheap, that's a fair gripe. Toilet cleanliness at private campsites should be non-negotiable. Worth calling ahead to check if they've improved maintenance since.

Low YK had a more positive experience and specifically called out the staff showing up during a stormy night with strong gusty winds to check on campers and offer help. That kind of hands-on management makes a real difference when things go sideways at 2am.

TAHAN Tip

If you're coming on a weekend, call ahead to Mr. Parish at 012-389 7944 and ask about the current crowd situation — and specifically which spots near the lake are still free. The dark zone at the back is underrated. Cooler, quieter, and less photo-op chaos. If you're a light sleeper who doesn't want to hear someone's Bluetooth speaker at midnight, head there instead of the main lake area.
