Rawa Island Resort — Is This Johor Island Worth the Splurge?

The Vibe
Rawa Island is one of those places that doesn't look real. The sand is so fine and white it genuinely feels like baby powder under your feet. The water? Crystal clear with that blue-green colour you usually only see on travel Instagram. It's about 16km off Mersing, so you need to take a ferry to get there — and that ferry ride alone already feels like you're leaving the real world behind.
This is a resort stay, not a wild campsite. Think proper rooms, a dining hall, a pool, and activities like snorkelling and island walking trails. The crowd is mostly families, couples on a getaway, and divers. It's relaxed and unhurried — the kind of place where you eat, swim, eat again, maybe snorkel, then eat some more. Very sesuai for people who want nature without roughing it too hard.
One thing to be very clear about — Rawa is weather-dependent. Ferry operations get cancelled when the sea is rough, which happens more frequently during the monsoon season (roughly November to February). One reviewer had a confirmed booking but couldn't get to the island at all because the ferry wasn't running. So plan accordingly and check conditions before you go.

Getting There
You drive to Mersing town first. From KL, it's roughly 3 to 3.5 hours via the LEKAS highway toward Johor. From JB, it's about 2 hours north up Route 3. GPS to Mersing Jetty — that's your departure point.
From Mersing Jetty, the ferry to Rawa takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on sea conditions. The resort operates their own ferry service, so you'll need to coordinate your arrival time with them when you book. Call ahead: 07-799 1204. Don't just show up at the jetty and hope for the best.
Parking is available in Mersing town near the jetty area. Not free, but easy enough to find. Once you're on the island, there's no driving — everything is on foot.

What to Expect
Rawa is a small island so you're not going to be trekking for hours. But there is an island walking trail that reviewers say is a proper workout — good views, worth doing. The beach is the main draw and it delivers. Powder-soft sand, clear water, and a decent variety of fish if you go snorkelling. You don't even need to go far from shore.
The resort is family-friendly — there's a slide (more on that later), stroller-accessible paths, and baby changing facilities. Families with young kids do well here. Couples too. Solo hikers looking for a hardcore experience, this isn't your spot.
Rooms are comfortable but not luxury. Some could use a refurb. There's no fridge in the rooms, which is annoying if you're travelling with babies or need to keep things cold. Water pressure in the bathrooms is low — the island has limited freshwater supply, so that's kind of understandable, but still worth knowing.
If you're planning to bring a lot of gear to the island — snorkel sets, beach chairs, bags of food — the TAHAN AllTerrain Foldable Wagon is genuinely useful here. Loading and unloading from the ferry, then moving your stuff from the jetty to your room — it handles up to 100kg and folds flat when not in use.

Facilities
Rooms
Clean and comfortable enough for a beach getaway. Some rooms need refurbishment. No fridge — a real gap if you're travelling with babies or need cold storage.
Toilets
The toilets behind the dining hall have been flagged — some doors can't lock, and reviewers prefer dry toilets. The common toilet does have a baby changing table though, which is a nice touch for families.
Water
Low water pressure in the rooms. Island has limited freshwater, so this is somewhat expected. Don't expect a power shower.
Food
Multiple reviewers say the food is good. The welcome drink is a highlight. They have a proper mocktail menu — the Shirley Temple gets a specific shoutout for being fizzy and sweet. Dining hall on-site.
Activities
Island walking trail, snorkelling, and a dive centre on site. There's also a slide — but read the next section before you let the kids loose on it.
Ferry
Resort-operated. Only way on and off the island. Subject to cancellation during bad weather. Always confirm ferry schedule before travelling.
