The Vibe

Otternest Camp sits inside Hutan Lipur Gunung Pulai 2, just outside Pekan Nanas in Johor. This is a proper overnight campsite — you can pitch your tent, stay the night, and wake up to forest sounds. Good to know upfront because not every campsite in Gunung Pulai lets you do that.

The vibe here is relaxed. Spacious campground, greenery all around, and a river running alongside the site that really pulls the whole experience together. It's not a wild, deep-jungle kind of place — more like a well-managed camp that families and school groups use for outdoor activities and character-building programs. The staff run structured programs, but you can also just show up and camp.

If you're from Johor Bahru and need a quick nature fix without driving too far north, this is probably one of the more solid options in the southern region. Clean air, river, trees. Nothing too complicated.

Getting There

The address is Hutan Lipur Gunung Pulai 2, 81500 Pekan Nanas, Johor. Plug it into Google Maps and search for "Otternest Camp" — the CID link should bring you right to it. From JB, you're looking at roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. Take the route toward Pontian via Pekan Nanas, and watch for signage toward Gunung Pulai Recreational Forest.

The road to get in shouldn't be a problem for regular cars — Gunung Pulai is a well-known recreational area and the access roads are maintained. But call ahead on 014-338 2599 to confirm conditions, especially after heavy rain. Road can get slippery and the campsite itself gets muddy patches when it rains.

What to Expect

Flat, spacious ground with decent shade. The river is right there, which is honestly the highlight — reviewers keep coming back to it. It makes the whole stay feel more like a proper outdoor experience rather than just sleeping in a field.

Crowd-wise, this place gets used a lot for youth programs, school camps, and group retreats. So if you're going on a weekday, you might find groups doing activities around the site. Weekends might be a mix of families and organized groups. It's not a secluded hideaway — more of a managed camp environment.

Best suited for: families with kids, school or corporate groups, and beginner campers who want proper facilities nearby. Not really the spot for solo campers looking for solitude or hardcore outdoorsy types who want zero structure. But for what it is, it delivers.

Facilities

Toilets

There are toilets on site, but here's the issue — they're shared between men and women. No separate blocks. One reviewer flagged this specifically, and honestly, for a family campsite, it's a valid gripe. Manage expectations accordingly.

Water

River is right beside the camp, and the site appears to have basic water access given reviewers mention it as clean and functional. Bring your own drinking water regardless.

Ground Conditions

Gets muddy fast after rain. Water stagnates in low-lying areas. If it's been raining the day before your trip, bring a groundsheet and expect wet patches around the site.

Activities

Structured outdoor activities are part of what Otternest offers, especially for groups. Multiple reviewers mentioned the programs run by the staff. Good for kids, good for team building. If you're just camping independently, the river alone gives you plenty to do.

What Campers Are Saying

One camper gave it 4 stars and was generally happy with the spacious layout and riverside setting, but raised two real concerns — muddy ground after rain and the combined toilet situation. Fair points both. These aren't dealbreakers but they're the kind of things you want to know before you arrive.

A few others who came through youth or school programs were genuinely impressed. One guy said the camp basically built a new version of him — which sounds dramatic but you get the idea. The structured environment and nature combo clearly hits different for young people who've never camped before.

Multiple reviewers specifically called out the staff. Supportive, hands-on, enthusiastic. That's not always a given at managed camps. Makes a real difference especially if you're bringing kids along.

The overall consensus: clean, peaceful, river is the star attraction, great for groups and families. Not a luxurious setup by any means, but solid for what it is.

TAHAN Tip

If you're pitching your own tent, scout for higher ground first — even a slight elevation difference will save you from sleeping in a puddle if it rains overnight. The low-lying spots near the river look tempting but they flood fast. Set up slightly away from the water's edge and bring a quality groundsheet. Johor rain doesn't mess around.
