The Vibe

You know that feeling when you unzip your tent in the morning and the view just hits you? That's NR Campsite Kundasang. Wake up, step outside, and there she is — Mount Kinabalu, right in your face. No squinting through trees, no partial view. Just the full thing, clear and massive, staring back at you. On a good morning with low clouds, it's honestly one of the better campsite views in all of Sabah.

The crowd here is a mix — families, couples, hikers passing through before or after Sosodikon Hill. It's not a hardcore camping spot. This is the kind of place you bring your kids, your elderly parents, maybe even your 8-months-pregnant wife (yes, someone actually did that and had a great time). The vibe is chill, clean, and community-style. Affordable too. You're not paying premium glamping prices here.

The cool Kundasang air is a constant. Even midday you'll want a light jacket. Nights get properly cold. No complaints on that front — it's what makes camping up here so good compared to sweating it out down in KK.

Getting There

The address is Jalan Kauluan, 89308 Kundasang, Sabah. If you're coming from Kota Kinabalu, head east on the KK-Ranau Highway (Route A1) towards Ranau. Kundasang is about 80–90km from KK, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic. Once you hit the Kundasang area, search for NR Campsite Mesilou on Google Maps — reviewers also refer to it by that name, so use that if the search isn't pulling it up.

From the parking area, you'll need to hike up about 20 steps to reach the campsite. Nothing crazy, but if you're hauling heavy gear, pack smart. The road leading in is Kundasang standard — nothing that requires 4WD, but just take it easy. No info on the road condition being rough, so a normal car should be fine.

What to Expect

The campsite is spacious and well laid out. There are multiple sites to choose from — at least Site E is specifically mentioned by campers, and it's popular with families because it sits close to the toilets. If you're bringing kids or anyone who needs easy access, that's your spot.

The terrain is highland — grassy open areas with mountain views. You're at elevation here, so the ground is relatively firm and the air stays crisp. Stargazing at night is seriously good. Low light pollution, high altitude, clear skies when the weather cooperates. Bring a mat and lie flat. Worth it.

One more thing — NR Campsite is right next to the trail leading up Sosodikon Hill. So if you're the type who likes to combine hiking with your camping trip, you've got that option baked in. Easy to plan a morning hike before breakfast.

Overall, this is beginner and family-friendly. The facilities are there, the owner is hands-on and helpful, and the location does most of the heavy lifting. Even glampers who aren't really campers will be comfortable here.

Facilities

Toilets

Multiple reviewers specifically called out the toilets as clean and roomy. For a budget campsite, that's not something you always get. Site E is closest to them if that matters to you.

Showers

Cool mountain water. No water heater. In Kundasang's cold weather, that shower takes some willpower — but honestly, you get used to it fast. One reviewer joked it's why the locals look so young. Ha.

Electricity

Plug points available on site. Charge your phone, your powerbank, your camera. Good to have at a campsite like this where you'll be taking a lot of photos.

Water

Mountain water supply on site. No mention of piped treated water, so bring your own drinking water or a filter just to be safe.

Parking

There's a parking area at the base. You hike up about 20 steps from there to the campsite. Nothing strenuous, just factor it in when packing.

What Campers Are Saying

A family who camped here said it's one of the cleanest campsites they've visited — spacious spots, clean toilets, and Mount Kinabalu visible right from their tent. They specifically chose Site E for the toilet proximity and said it worked out perfectly for their family setup.

One reviewer who went with a group raved about the cool mountain weather and the affordable pricing. She said the facilities were well-maintained throughout their stay and they're already planning a return trip. The cold shower from mountain water got a special mention — not a complaint, more like a badge of honour.

Another camper highlighted the plug points and clean toilets as standouts, and said the campsite is perfect for stargazing. She also pointed out the Sosodikon Hill trailhead right next door — good bonus for hikers. No water heater, she noted, but in Kundasang's weather she said it actually adds to the experience rather than takes away from it.

The owner gets consistent shoutouts. Friendly, helpful, went above and beyond — one group was so impressed they mentioned being served with an auto tent setup. That kind of personal touch makes a difference, especially if you're a first-timer.

And this one takes the cake — one reviewer was 8 months pregnant and said she felt comfortable throughout the whole stay. Plug points, clean toilets, good views, friendly owner. She's coming back. That tells you a lot about how well-maintained this place is.

TAHAN Tip

Book or check in early if you want Site E — it's the most convenient spot for families and fills up on weekends. Also, Kundasang mornings are the clearest for Mount Kinabalu views. Clouds usually roll in by mid-morning. Set your alarm, step outside early, and catch that unobstructed view. Don't sleep through it.
