The Vibe

Teluk Tongkang isn't the kind of beach camp you just stumble upon. You cross a footbridge to get in — about 300 metres — and that alone filters out the casual crowd. No cars, no motorcycles, no one driving up and parking next to your tent. Just you, the sound of the sea, flat sandy beach, and jungle at your back. Even on a Sunday, one visitor said the place was nearly empty. That's rare for a beach campsite in Pahang.

The people who run this place are a big part of why regulars keep coming back. The owner — called EJ by those who know the place — is genuinely hands-on. Friendly, helpful, and apparently willing to take you to a secret beach about 10 minutes into the jungle if you're lucky enough to be invited. There's also a small mini bar area for beverages and decent music playing. It's got a real community feel. Not a resort, not a commercial campsite. More like camping at someone's passion project.

The beach itself is calm — flat, no waves, good for families or anyone who just wants to sit and stare at the water without getting knocked over. The sand gets hot during the day so flip flops are your best friend. Wild jungle sits right behind the campsite. EJ apparently keeps an eye out for wildlife too, so you're not totally on your own out there.

Getting There

The campsite is in Kuantan, Pahang — postcode 25050. The Google Maps pin should get you close enough: click here for directions. Teluk Tongkang is close to Teluk Cempedak, which is one of Kuantan's more well-known beaches. If you know where Teluk Cempedak is — with the Starbucks, McDonald's and souvenir stalls — you're basically already in the neighbourhood. Teluk Tongkang is just next to it.

The key thing to know before you go: you cannot drive into the campsite. Access is via a footbridge, roughly 300 metres long. That means you're carrying or dragging everything you need across that bridge on foot. Plan your gear accordingly. Nothing crazy — but if you're showing up with four bags, a cooler box, and a 10-person tent, you're going to have a rough time. Pack smart or bring fewer things.

What to Expect

This is a proper beach campsite — flat ground, sandy surface, calm sea in front, jungle behind. Beginner-friendly in terms of terrain but the footbridge entry does mean you need to think about what you're hauling in. Families can manage it fine. Couples especially. Solo campers will love how quiet it gets.

The crowd is thin, even on weekends. That's genuinely unusual. Most Kuantan beach spots get packed during school holidays and long weekends, but Teluk Tongkang sits just far enough off the main drag that it doesn't attract the hordes. The rocky side of the beach is apparently worth exploring too — different feel from the main sandy stretch.

If you're into that adventure angle, ask EJ about the secret beach. It's a 10-minute walk through the woods and from what people say, totally worth it. The wild jungle behind the campsite also means there's wildlife around — nothing threatening from the sounds of it, but bring your curiosity.

Electricity

None mentioned by any reviewer. Assume zero grid power. Powerbank and a good lantern are non-negotiable.

Kiosk / Mini Bar

There's a small kiosk on site and the owner runs a mini bar with beverages. So you don't have to bring absolutely everything. Nice touch.

Parking

Parking is before the footbridge, at the entrance. You park, load up, and walk across. So don't leave anything valuable in sight in your car.

What Campers Are Saying

A German visitor who gave the place 3 stars still called it "the best place for camping in Malaysia" — just with the caveat that the building is rundown. In other words, the location is genuinely special, even if the infrastructure hasn't kept pace.

One regular camper from outside Malaysia said she couldn't leave. Literally. She stayed longer than planned because the people were that welcoming. She still goes back whenever she can. That's not something you hear often about a campsite.

A group of friends from KL who ditched the usual hotel booking for this place had a great time — the music, the mini bar, the rocky beach, the owner's hospitality. They got taken to the secret beach, which sealed the deal. They mentioned Teluk Cempedak is literally next door if you need food, coffee or a quick civilisation fix.

One camper kept it short and sweet: good rest, waves, birds chirping. Said it made him want to poop. High praise by Malaysian camping standards, honestly.

A Polish visitor summed it up well — peaceful beach, small café, amazing owners. Three things that matter most at a beach camp, and this place has all three.

TAHAN Tip

The footbridge entry is the one thing that catches people off guard. 300 metres doesn't sound like much until you're lugging a full pack, a cooler, and a tent bag in Kuantan heat. If you're coming as a group, do one trip to set up camp first, then go back for the rest. And since the sand gets hot during the day, set up your tent early — ideally near the tree line at the back where there's some shade. You'll thank yourself at 2pm when the sun is punishing.

For the overnight stay, sleeping on sandy ground means you want something between you and the floor.
