The Vibe

Jangoi River Lodge is a picnic and recreation spot along the Padawan stretch, about an hour's drive from Kuching. Before you start packing your tent — note that this place is primarily a day-trip destination. You can pitch a tent and do BBQ here, but this isn't your full overnight camping ground in the usual sense. It's more of a river lodge for group hangouts, family outings, picnics, and church camps. So go in with that mindset.

That said, the vibe here is genuinely good. Think kampung river, trees overhead, kids screaming as they hit the water, and locals hanging around making sure nobody drowns. There's a flying fox (zipline), a rope swing, and a river that ranges from shallow paddling areas to 12-foot-deep pools. It's the kind of place where you show up stressed and leave a bit more human again.

Weekends get busy — it's popular with families, church groups, and office trip crowds from Kuching. But the river is long and wide enough that even on a packed day, you can usually find your own corner. The staff are friendly, occasionally snap photos of visitors, and post them on their Facebook page — so check that out if you want to see what the place currently looks like.

Getting There

The address is along Jalan Padawan, Kampung Peraya, about 14km in, near Siburan. From Kuching city, it's roughly a one-hour drive — reviewers consistently mention this, so budget your time accordingly. The road into the area is a standard rural kampung road, nothing extreme. No 4WD needed. Parking is available but limited, especially on weekends. Carpool if you're coming in a group, or get there early to snag a spot. What to Expect

This is a recreational river spot, not a wilderness experience. The river is the main draw — it's wide, long, and has different depth zones. Some parts are ankle-deep, some are 12 feet down. Current can be fast, especially after rain, so don't take the water for granted. Staff are stationed nearby and will wave you off from going too deep, which is reassuring especially if you're bringing kids or non-swimmers.

The flying fox is the highlight. Going up feels scarier than coming down — but the descent is slower and more relaxed than you'd expect. Good fun. The rope swing exists too, but landing can be shallow so take care on that one. The river water quality seems to vary — some reviewers found it clean and clear, others noticed it looking murky on their visit. It probably depends on recent rainfall and how many people are in the water that day.

This spot is best suited for families with kids, friend groups, corporate outings, and church camps. Not a hardcore camping destination. Beginners and casual outdoor folks will feel right at home here. There are public toilets and changing rooms near the carpark. They're basic — dark inside and simply designed. One reviewer flagged that during their visit there was zero water in the toilets, showers, and sinks for the entire day, which made things very difficult. It seems like water supply can be inconsistent. Bring extra water just in case, and definitely pack wet wipes and hand sanitiser.

Canopies & Shelter

Available if you pre-book. The management can set up canopies for group events — so coordinate in advance rather than showing up and hoping.

Limited. Fills up fast on weekends. Carpool or arrive early.

A small store on site sells slippers and snacks. Don't rely on it for full meals — pack your own food, especially if you're coming as a group.

What Campers Are Saying

One regular visitor — someone who's clearly lost count of how many times she's been back — says this place has a way of making you forget you even own a phone. Pure kampung energy. She loves it specifically for that disconnected, slow-paced feeling you can't get in the city.

A family group who arranged their visit through Gabriel said everything was well-prepared when they arrived — canopies set up, a room ready. They did flag that the river has deep spots up to 12 feet, and the current is quick enough to take your slippers away. Thankfully the store sells replacement slippers. Convenient? Suspiciously so.

One reviewer who came for a church gathering gave it four stars, mainly because the water looked a bit murky on their visit. He also noted that parking fills up fast and the drive from Kuching takes about an hour, so planning matters. He still said it's worth it for nature lovers.

The flying fox was a highlight for multiple visitors. One reviewer pointed out that the climb up feels more intimidating than the ride down — and that the zipline is slower than expected, which actually makes it more enjoyable. Relaxing, almost.

The one thing multiple people flagged: the toilet facilities need work. One visitor had no water in the toilets, showers, or sinks for their entire visit. She wished the management had warned guests upfront so they could prepare. Fair point. If you're going, be ready for facilities that might not always cooperate.
