Area Overview
Literally translated to Black Mountain, Gunung Hitam is not as scary as it sounds — unless your imagination is working overtime. It sits relatively close to Sungai Gabai Waterfall and, surprisingly, it hasn't been trekked by many. The back-and-forth trail is approximately 15km in total, so you'll definitely want to pack extra water for this one.
If you're after a proper jungle experience, Gunung Hitam delivers. Greens everywhere, mosquitoes included — it's a mountain after all. The incline is no joke though. We're talking almost 1km of near-straight climbing. If you're a beginner or just getting into hiking, hold off on this one until you've built up some trail legs first.
One interesting landmark to watch out for is an abandoned Orang Asli hut along the trail — a good spot to catch your breath and take a short break. There are also plenty of signboards throughout, so getting lost isn't a major worry. As for views, don't expect a grand panorama at the peak. That said, on a clear day you can apparently spot Ampang and Kuala Lumpur in the distance, which makes the grind worth it.
Worth knowing: Gunung Hitam requires a permit before you hike. Check our full breakdown of Selangor hiking permits and trails so you're not caught off guard at the trailhead.
Things to Note Before You Go
- Bring at least 2 litres of water — and stash some extra in your car for after the hike. A TAHAN TrailBladder 2L Water Bladder keeps your hands free and makes sipping on the go a lot easier on a long climb like this.
- Keep an eye out for leeches. Long socks help more than you'd think.
- Bring hiking shoes with solid traction — the trail gets seriously slippery after rain.
- A hiking pole makes a real difference on steep descents. The TAHAN Kinetix Knee Guard is also worth throwing in your bag if your knees tend to complain on steep downhill sections.
- Pack enough food. This hike takes hours and you will feel it.
- Bring a headlamp just in case you're still on trail as daylight fades.
