Banding Island — Lake Views, Rainforest Vibes, and a Bit of History
The Vibe
Let's be straight about something first — Banding Island is not a traditional campsite where you pitch your tent under the stars. This is more of a resort and recreational destination, home to the Belum Rainforest Resort, sitting right in the middle of Tasik Temenggor up in Gerik, Perak. So if you drove all the way here expecting a patch of flat ground to set up your MSR, you're going to be disappointed. What you get instead is something a little different — and honestly, still worth the trip.
The whole area sits within the Royal Belum State Park — one of the oldest rainforests in the world, older than even the Amazon. The lake itself is massive and incredibly calm, surrounded by thick jungle on all sides. When you arrive, the air hits different. Cooler, heavier, quieter than the city. There's a floating restaurant on the lake, a food court on the first floor facing the deck, boat trips you can book, and enough activities to keep you busy for a full day or two. Trekking, visiting Orang Asli villages, river trips — ada semua tu.
The crowd here is mixed — families looking for a proper getaway, nature lovers who want to be close to Belum without going full hardcore, and history buffs (yes, there's a connection to the Malay Communist history that some visitors find genuinely fascinating). It's not a party spot. The vibe is relaxed, contemplative almost. You come here to slow down.

Getting There
From KL, you're looking at roughly 4 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic. Head up the North-South Expressway towards Ipoh, then take the route towards Gerik via Kuala Kangsar. From Gerik town, follow the road towards Temenggor — you'll be driving along the lake for a stretch, and the views on this road alone are something else. Banding Island is at the 33300 Gerik postcode area, and there are signs once you're close.
From Ipoh specifically, it's around 3 hours as some reviewers mentioned. The road is paved and generally fine for normal cars — no need for 4WD. But the Gerik highway cuts through deep jungle, so plan your petrol stops. Don't assume there's a Shell around every corner up there. Fill up before Gerik.

If you're arriving late in the day like some visitors do, you'll miss the boat trips for that day — those run during daylight hours. Best to arrive in the morning if you want to make the most of it.
What to Expect
This isn't roughing it. The resort has proper accommodation, so most people staying here are in rooms, not tents. The experience is centred around the lake and the surrounding Belum rainforest. Boat trips are the main draw — you can do a round-island trip, a half-day, or a full-day outing. Pricing wasn't super clear from the reviews, so call ahead or ask on arrival. Bro Rahim the boatman gets name-dropped specifically by one visitor — apparently an excellent guide, so if you can request him, do it.
The trekking options take you into proper primary jungle — this is Belum we're talking about, home to elephants, tapirs, and Rafflesia flowers. The Orang Asli village visit is a common activity and genuinely eye-opening if you've never done one. It's not a theme park version — the communities are real and the interactions are meaningful when done respectfully.

For the food, there are two spots — a food court on the first floor with a deck overlooking the lake, and a smaller floating restaurant right on the water. Not everything on the menu is always available, so go in with flexible expectations. But the meals are decent and the setting makes everything taste better, honestly.
This place suits families, couples, and anyone who wants a nature experience without going full jungle survival mode. Not for the hardcore backpacker looking to rough it — but perfect for someone who wants nature access with a bit of comfort.

What Campers Are Saying
One visitor drove all the way from Ipoh — over 3 hours — and arrived late evening. He missed the boat trips that day but still found it worthwhile just for the setting. His advice: come earlier so you catch at least the afternoon boat run.
Multiple reviewers specifically praised the service. The staff at Belum Rainforest Resort get consistent good marks — friendly, helpful, and genuinely hospitable. One reviewer called out boatman Bro Rahim by name and said his full-day trip was nothing short of splendid. When locals start naming their guides in reviews, you know the experience left an impression.
The food comes up a lot — most people enjoyed the meals, though a few noted that not everything on the menu is always available. Manage your expectations but don't stress about it. Eat whatever they have while looking out at the lake. You'll be fine.
One reviewer specifically mentioned stepping into the history of the Malay Communist movement here — there are traces and context around the Belum area that connect to that chapter of Malaysian history. Not something you'd expect from a lake resort, but it adds real depth to the trip if you're into that sort of thing.

The overall sentiment across reviews is consistently positive — people leave wanting to come back for a longer stay or a more complete package. That says a lot for a place this far up north.
TAHAN Tip
Book the full-day boat trip if you can — the half-day versions are good but the full-day takes you deeper into Belum where the real jungle experience kicks in. And call ahead to check if Bro Rahim is available to guide you. Good guides make or break lake and jungle trips, and that guy clearly knows his stuff.
